1 Read the rubric and the model. What is the function of each paragraph?
You have had a class discussion about shopping. Now your teacher has asked you to write an essay on the following question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping? Write your essay (200-250 words).
These days lots of people shop online. Everything from designer clothes to groceries can be bought on the Internet and delivered to our door. Is this as good as it sounds?
First of all, there is the question of convenience. Shopping is done from home so it makes life easier. Crowds and traffic are avoided and there are no heavy bags to carry. On the other hand, shopping online can be misleading. For example, when buying a product without touching it or trying it on, it may be nothing like the advertisement on the screen.
Secondly, we need to consider the matter of choice. There is a huge range of online products to choose from and we can compare prices on different websites. This can result m considerable savings. One disadvantage, though, is that some products incur delivery charges. This can work out quite expensive, particularly for overseas deliveries. The last point concerns payment. The online shopper has no need to withdraw cash from the bank or carry a card around. This means that there is no worry about falling victim to pickpocketing. Yet shopping online can put us at risk of credit card fraud. We must ensure, therefore, that we only use reputable sites that protect our credit card details.
All in all, there are both advantages and disadvantages to shopping online. It is easy and convenient but it is also risky. We should weigh up the pros and cons carefully before making a purchase on the Internet.
2 List the arguments for and against. How does the writer justify his/her points? Copy and complete the table.

2 According to a US study, 70 per cent of children between the ages of 8 and 18 have TV sets in their rooms. Thirty-five percent have access to satellite or cable TV. These figures suggest it is worth examining the effect TV has on a childtasks development.

c The negative role that television plays in the development of a child can be summed up with a quotation from the American architect. Frank Lloyd Wright: “TV is chewing gum for the eyes.”
