The caves of steel
The boss smiled. “I had this arranged specially last year, Lije. I dontaskt think Itaskve showed it to you before. Come over here and take a look. In the old days, all rooms had things like this. They were called taskwindowstask. Did you know that?" Baley knew that very well, having viewed many historical novels. "I’ve heard of them." he said. “Come here." said the boss.
Baley squirmed a bit, A) but did as he was told. There was something strange about the privacy of a room being exposed to the outside world. Sometimes the boss was over the top with his affection for the past Like with his glasses, Baley thought.
That was it! That was what made him look wrong! Baley said. “Pardon me. Boss, but youtaskre wearing new glasses, arentaskt you?” The boss stared at him in mild surprise, look off his glasses, looked at them and then at Baley. Without his glasses, his round face seemed rounder B) and his chin a little more pronounced. He looked confused, too, as his eyes couldntaskt focus properly. He said, “Yes.” He put his glasses back on his nose, then added with real anger, “I broke my old ones three days ago. What with one thing or another I wasntaskt able to replace them until this morning. Lije, those three days were awful." “On account of the glasses?” Baley asked. “And other things, too. I will tell you about that” He turned to the window C) and so did Baley. With mild shock, Baley realised it was raining. For a minute, he was lost in the sight of water dropping from the sky, while the boss displayed a kind of pride as though the phenomenon was something hetaskd arranged. “This is the third time this month Itaskve watched it rain. Amazing, dontaskt you think?"
Against his will. Baley had to admit to himself that he was impressed. In his forty-two years he had rarely seen rain. D) or any of the phenomena of nature, for that matter. He said, “It always seems a waste for all that water to come down on the city. It should limit itself to the reservoirs.” “Lije,” said the boss, “you are too modem. That’s your trouble. In the old days, people lived in the open. I dontaskt mean on the farms only. I mean in the cities, too. liven in New York. When it rained, they didntaskt think of it as waste. They liked it They lived close to nature. Ittasks healthier, better. The troubles of modern life come from being separated from nature. Read up on the Coal Century, some time.”
Baley had. I le hail heard many people moaning about the invention of the nuclear reactor. He moaned about it himself when things went wrong. E) or when he got tired. Moaning like that was normal in human nature. Back in the Coal Century, people moaned about the invention of the steam engine. In one of Shakespeare’s plays, a character moaned about the invention of gunpowder. A thousand years in the future, theytaskd be moaning about the invention of the human-robot brain.
He said, grimly, "Look, Julius." It wasntaskt normal for him to be so friendly with the boss at work, however many times the boss called him ‘Lije’, F) but something special was called for here. "Look, Julius, youtaskre talking about everything except what I came in here for, and it’s worrying me. What is it?" The boss said, “Itaskll get to it. Lije. I’ll get me do it my way. Ittasks - ittasks trouble.” “Sure. What isntaskt on this planet? More trouble with the Robots?” “In a way, yes, Lije."

Текст аудирования:
In the next part of the story the boss tells Lije about the conflict between Earthlings and Spacers. Earthlings are people who live on earth. They stayed on earth when the Spacers left earth to live on other planets. There was a war between Earthlings and Spacers. The Spacers broke contact with Earth so that Earthlings could not travel to other planets. There was no contact between them for many years.
A thousand years later, some Spacers returned to Earth. Now they live in the same city as Lije and his boss. Earthlings dislike them because of the war. Spacers are separated from Earthlings and live in their own area called Spacetown. Spacers are rich and try to keep Earthlings away from Spacetown.
The boss tells Lije that a Spacer died three days ago. The Spacers think that an Earthling killed him. Lije is very surprised. He doesn’t think that it could be an Earthling. The boss reminds him of the conflict. He tells Lije about the tension building between Earthlings and Spacers. He wants Lije to investigate and find out who killed the Spacer.
Lije wonders why the boss has chosen him when there are better detectives that could do it. The boss tells him it’s because they are friends and he knows he can trust him. He says Lije can also gain a lot from solving the crime. The Spacers want one of their own policemen to work on solving the crime as well. Lije agrees to have a Spacer partner. His partner will live in his house with him and his family. Then, the boss tells him that his partner will be a robot that has been built by the Spacers. Lije really doesn’t like robots. He thinks that they will replace Earthlings in the future. He doesn’t want to work with a robot. He is worried about what his wife, Jessie, will say. Lije finally agrees because the boss will give him a promotion when he has solved the crime.
