Unit 1.13
Green Issues
1 Look at the pictures. Which energy resources do you think will eventually run out and which ones will not run out? Read through and check.
2 RNE Read the text given below. Form derivatives from the words in brackets and marked by numbers 1-6 to make them match the contents of the text grammatically and lexically. Each gap corresponds with a separate task from group 1-6. Compare answers with a partner. Listen and check.
Our Energy Resources
There are two categories of energy resources: renewable and non-renewable. Non-renewable energy sources are almost 1) impossible to replace once they have been used up. Renewable energy resources, on the other hand, never run out.
Non-renewable energy comes from fossil fuels such as coal, oi and natural gas. They were formed over millions of years from the remains of living things, and are found deep 2) underground. Fossil fuels release energy when they are burnt, but they also release large amounts of carbon dioxide, which pollutes the atmosphere and increases 3) global warming.
Renewable energy resources include wind, water and solar power. The Earth has an 4) endless supply of these forms of power and using them causes little or no pollution. The power of the wind is converted into electricity using wind turbines. Flowing water, whether from dams or ocean waves, can be very 5) powerful (power), while energy from the sun can provide warmth for our homes.
Cutting down on the amount of fossil fuels we use would reduce pollution and conserve the Earthtasks resources before they disappear 6) completely. We can all help – for example, by walking instead of driving, and turning off the lights when we leave a room.
3 Match the words in bold to their meanings.
Speaking
4 In pairs, discuss the benefits of using water, wind and solar power as energy sources.
Listening
5 Listen to two people talking about how to save energy. List the points under the headings: home – school.
Текст аудирования:
Andy: You know Kate, with all the environmental problems in the world, we should do what we can to try and save energy.
Kate: What sort of things do you mean?
Andy: Well, there are lots of things we can do at home.
Kate: What? Like turning off the lights when you leave a room and spending less time in the shower?
Andy: Exactly. You can also make sure you close the curtains at night to save on heat and also wash the dishes by hand rather than using the dishwasher.
Kate: Oh yes, I hadn’t thought of that. What about at school? Are there things we can do there as well?
Andy: Of course there are. Make sure you always turn off your computer after you’ve finished using it.
Kate: Yes, and you can also make sure windows are closed if the heating or air-conditioning is on.
Andy: That’s right, otherwise you waste energy. You should also make sure that there is nothing blocking the air vents.
Kate: Ah yes, otherwise the heating won’t work properly and it will get turned up, which would waste energy, too!
Andy: There are so many things we can do ...
Project
ICT In groups, collect information, then write a short article about how to save energy at home. You can use ideas from Ex. 5. And the Internet.
