Respond to an invitation?
1 You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend, Beatrice, who writes:
… I’m going on a cycling weekend in the Peak District National Park in June with two friends. I know you’ve done something similar before. Did you enjoy it? Did you hire your bikes or did you take your own? How about coming to visit me that weekend and coming on the cycling trip with us?
I’m busy preparing for a presentation that I have to do at school about a foreign country…
Write a letter to Beatrice. In your letter:
answer her questions
ask 3 questions about the school presentation Write 100-140 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

3 You have just come back from a family holiday in England and unfortunately your mum left an important personal item in the hotel room. Write a letter to the manager of the hotel describing the item and asking him/her if it has been found (120-ISO words).
2 a) Read the extracts and match them to the rubrics in Ex. 1. What style is each written in? Which uses: narrative techniques? Descriptive techniques?
A … As soon as we had got into the theme park, it started to rain heavily. Everyone began to put up their umbrellas and it became more and more difficult to keep up with my group in the crowd. Suddenly, I realised that my friends were nowhere to be seen. Then, just as I was about to call my best friend on my mobile, a man bumped into me, pushed me to the ground and snatched the phone out of my hand! …
B ... You asked me about the cycling holiday I went on. Well, it was so much fun and the countryside was absolutely beautiful! We cycled through lovely little towns bordering a lake, with majestic snow-capped mountains in the background. We hired our bikes as it’s much easier to do that than to transport your own. As for coming with you on your cycling weekend in June, I’d really love to, but unfortunately I can’t. In June, I’ll be...
C ... My mother thinks that she may have left the diary in the bottom drawer of the bedside table on the left of the bed. The diary is mediumsized, dark blue and leather-bound and it has her initials, TBY, engraved on the front in gold lettering. If you find the diary, would it be possible...

The order of the Phoenix
Dear James,
A Well, I hope you enjoy the DVD. Write and tell me what you thought!
В Where did you go to see the Shakespeare performance you told me about? Which play did you see? Was the acting good?
C In the film, Harry (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and Professor Dumbledore believe that Lord Voldemort has returned. So, Harry secretly begins training a small group of students which he calls ‘Dumbledore’s Army’ — with the help of his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, of course! It’s an action-packed film with fantastic special effects and brilliant, effortless acting. I think it would be a great choice of film for you to watch with your friends!
D Thanks for your letter. How about watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with your friends? It’s the fifth in the series and my favourite so far!
Best Wishes,
David

2 The plot was very gripping and I couldn’t wait to find out how it would end.
3 The special effects were good but the amount of blood in the film was a bit shocking.
4 There were so many clues to follow that it was quite confusing and I lost track of the plot.
5 The ending of the book was so tragic that it made me cry.
6 The villain was such an evil character that I felt quite scared every time he came on the screen.
What does each sentence refer to: a film or a book?
6 Which of the sentences give a positive/ negative recommendation/opinion?
1 The story is totally original - I’ve never read anything like it before.
2 The main character is completely unbelievable.
3 This film will keep you entertained from start to finish.
4 It was so thrilling, I was on the edge of my seat.
5 The film is disappointing and not worth the price of the cinema ticket.
7 Think of a book and a film you like and write a recommendation for each.
