Ecological Organisations
Located in Scotland, the Findhorn Foundation aims to foster an awareness that our survival on Earth depends on a balanced relationship with the natural world. It promotes ways of living that protect the environment and improve the lives of everyone in the community. The Findhorn eco-village produces its own organic food, erects eco-houses and has renewable energy systems. Many people from around the world come to the village each year to learn about the Findhorn Foundation’s way of life.
ONE, an organisation with 2 million members, wants governments to keep their promises to improve life for the people of Africa. It does this by raising public awareness of the issues. ONE campaigns to get rid of hunger, provide education, wipe out disease and bring about sustainable development. With the invaluable support of celebrities like Sir Bob Geldof, ONE is working towards a better future for the African continent.
The Global Coral Reef Alliance (GCRA) was set up to reduce the damage done to one of the world’s most fragile marine ecosystems: coral reefs. The organisation works with governments and other organisations to preserve, restore and rebuild coral reefs around the world. The GCRA uses a special technique to grow coral and help reefs recover from the effects of disease and man-made destruction.
Eco-Schools is an international programme which is designed to encourage schools to get involved in environmental projects. Environmental education is not just part of the lesson, but an important part of the students’ lives. Schools also benefit financially from the advice the programme gives on reducing waste and implementing recycling schemes. A highly-valued award - the Green Flag - is given to schools that show they are committed to the highest environmental standards.
Reef Conservation International is a non-profit company that focuses on marine conservation in places such as Belize in the Caribbean and the Red Sea in Egypt. Projects include checking water quality and measuring pollution levels as well as carrying out surveys and helping protect turtles. People who would like to combine environmental work with a holiday should consider a trip with RCI. Their marine conservation holidays are open to anyone aged 18 or over.
The Environmental Investigation Agency is a highly-respected organisation dedicated to exposing crimes against endangered wildlife and the environment. The EIA work secretly to gather evidence and then present it to the media, governments and policymakers. They are involved in a wide range of projects which include preventing illegal logging in rainforests and highlighting threats to the big cats of Asia.
Do you know where your food comes from? Do you know where the money you pay for the food goes? The Fairtrade Foundation was set up to ensure that the people who grew the food in the first place get their fair share of the profits. The money the workers receive goes towards improving communities and developing farming methods. When you buy a product from the Fairtrade range, you can be sure that the money you pay will go into the pockets of those who need it most.
