Writing argumentative essays
1 Match the introductions and conclusions below and say which technique has been used in each one.
Introductions
1 Twenty years after the world’s worst nuclear disaster, in which up to 200,000 people died, nuclear power plants are still being built. How can some scientists insist that nuclear power is safe in the face of overwhelming evidence that suggests the opposite?
2 Have you ever passed a homeless person on your way to work and wondered how he or she got there? The next victim may be you! As more and more people get into debt, and lose their jobs or their social support, they also lose their ability to provide shelter for themselves. This problem, however, has many solutions.
3 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Can we use this saying to justify the display of any type of art, no matter how unconventional or controversial it may be?
Techniques for introductions
start with objective statement
make reference to an interesting scene/situation
address reader directly
a quotation/a rhetorical question
state problem that needs solution
Conclusions
A When considering how advanced our technology is, it is shameful to think that we cannot solve a problem such as homelessness. It seems to me that a little more compassion and a little less greed would make a big difference for those less fortunate than us.
B No one can deny that the natural resources we use to produce power will not last forever. But does the solution lie in putting our health and our lives at risk? More research needs to be done to determine whether we can use nuclear power safely.
C Freedom of expression is what art thrives on and should be protected. Whether an artist has the right to display a piece of art is a complex issue which every society must decide on for itself. After all, as G.K. Chesterton said, “Art, like morality, consists of drawing a line somewhere.”
Techniques for conclusions
your opinion on the topic
a statement giving the reader something to consider
a quotation or rhetorical question
2 Read the model, then complete the table with the points the writer makes for/against the topic.
The Advantages and Disadvantages of SPACE TRAVEL
According to Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, “space is the final frontier”. Whether you believe this or not, we have already made small steps into space. Some people say it is only a matter of time before we will send men to Mars and even explore beyond our solar system. Others think we should look after our own planet before we try to visit others.
On the one hand there may be a number of benefits to space exploration. Firstly, space travel will require a lot of specialised equipment and developing it will provide jobs for many people. Secondly, the new inventions that are created may also be useful for people on Earth. Also, space exploration requires advances in technology and knowledge especially in the areas of energy and mechanics. This new knowledge may provide solutions to problems on this planet. Finally, it may help us find a second home as one day Earth may not be big enough.
On the other hand, however, there are also many drawbacks to exploring space. To start with, the billions of dollars that will be spent on it could be put to better use solving the problems we have now, such as world hunger. Furthermore, some of the new technology developed for space exploration could be used for harmful purposes in the wrong hands.
All things considered, it seems that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. We need to use careful planning and good judgement to help us to invest in and use space technology wisely. Only time will tell if this is what will happen.
