Текст аудирования:
One morning that summer, Gatsby stopped his car outside my little house and invited me to lunch. I was rather surprised but decided to go with him. Gatsby seemed a little nervous.
Gatsby: Nick, old boy. Er, what do you think of me?
Nick: Er, well, it sure is nice to, er, get to know my, er, neighbour.
Gatsby: I’m gonna tell you something about my life, I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of untrue things about me. I am the son of some wealthy people in the Mid West -all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because it’s a family tradition. I inherited a lot of money. I went to Europe and lived like a little prince. Then the war came, and I fought in France, I became a major, and they gave me a medal for bravery.
There was something so strange about the way he was speaking that I wanted to laugh. I couldn’t believe a word of it. But then he took a small medal out of his pocket. ‘Major Jay Gatsby. For extraordinary courage.’ Now I was completely fascinated. The more I heard, the less I knew. Was he a criminal or an aristocrat? A successful businessman? A war hero? Had he gone to one of the worldtasks best universities? Or was he just a liar? That same afternoon I was having tea with Jordan at the Plaza Hotel.
Jordan: Do you remember the first time that I met you at Tom and Daisy’s?
Nick: Uh-huh.
Jordan: You told me you lived in West Egg, and I asked you if you knew Gatsby?
Nick: Yes, I think so ...
Jordan: Well, that night, after you left, Daisy came into my room and woke me up. She said that it must be the Jay Gatsby who she knew when she was eighteen years old - before she married Tom. And then I remembered. I had actually met Gatsby years ago when he was in the army. I think it was 1917. He was just about to go to fight in France, and he was having a romance with Daisy. They were madly in love.
Nick: Well, Jordan, I guess it’s a small world.
Jordan: No, Nick. Don’t you see? Gatsby bought that big house just so that he could be near Daisy again. He still loves her.
So now I knew why Gatsby had bought a big house in West Egg. And it was true ... he had fought in the Great War.

Текст аудирования:
It was only during my last conversation with Gatsby that I discovered the truth.
Gatsby: I think it’s time for me to tell you a secret, Nick. Itaskm not from a rich family after all. My parents were poor farmers.
Nick: Well, I think I had guessed they werentaskt rich somehow.
Gatsby: But, you know, old sport, even as a boy I had dreamed of being a success. I knew I was going to be big. I remember I came up with a daily programme for myself to make my dream come true. I used to start work on the farm at a quarter past seven every morning. So I used to get up earlier and study science books and do exercises. Then before I went to bed I used to practise elocution ... even how to walk in an elegant way.
Nick: What? Even when you were a boy?
Gatsby: Yes, I suppose I was 11 or 12 years old at the time. Finally when I was 17 I got a job working as a steward on a millionaire’s yacht. He taught me a lot about how to be a gentleman. But he died, so I joined the army, and that’s when I fell in love with Daisy. But I knew I was too poor for her. I was at Oxford when I found out that she had got married to Tom. It broke my heart, Nick.
Nick: I know.
Gatsby: A few years after the war, I finally came back to the States. I knew that Daisy would never love me if I didntaskt have any money. So I started working with criminal gangs. I’m very useful to them - I have a nice smile, I dress well, I have a good education and a medal from the war. And now I have enough money to live here in West Egg, to be close to Daisy. Don’t you understand?
Nick: But does she love you?
