Wetaskve bought a small cottage in the country. But we are townies, and we’re loving our town place! We don’t need a car to get to the shops, the post office is open until seven. There is a lovely square with places to eat; and there is life. It is not as quiet. But the streets are swept, and there is a cash machine, several in fact, just at the corner. Lots of supermarkets, and they stay open over lunchtime. One day we will be back to the cottage in the country. But not yet!
Speaker В
We love our life in the countryside. We know and speak to all our neighbours in our little commune, who are friendly and welcoming. Most importantly, we have the peace and tranquility of silence. You can hear the wind in the trees, and the birds singing. We have experienced no crime in the seven years we have been here, and there is space enough for our cat and dog to roam without fear of injury or causing disturbance to others.
Speaker C
In relation to the city versus the country, we are the happy recipients of both pleasures. We live in a suburban place where the advantages include walking distance to a cinema, four different supermarkets, two health food shops and a huge Sunday market. On the other hand, we enjoy the delights of living in a tranquil and sunny place, where we can relax in a sheltered large garden with fruit trees and flower beds. We absolutely love it!
Speaker D
The first year in the country was bearable. The renovation of the house took up a great deal of time. But after that I realsed that I was living among cows, sheep and chickens. For human contact, I had to learn Spanish to chat to the workmen, drive half an hour to our nearest neighbour, or wait until the vet comes by to check the hens. The cinema is seven miles away. When I sought a bit of culture, a neighbour suggested that I went to the Hereford cattle market on Wednesdays.
Speaker E
I spent fifteen years in London. Moved to the countryside six years ago. I loved working in London but hated living there. The pollution and noise was nerve wrecking. I couldn’t sleep at night and had bad headaches in the daytime. I don’t miss London at all. My life here has become less stressful and more relaxed - I enjoy walks in the fields and woods. And which is more - I sleep well and no longer suffer from the headaches I’ve had for years.
Speaker F
Wetaskve moved a lot, and I’ve loved (and NOT loved) different things about all the places wetaskve lived in. Right now we are in a rural area. The things I love most about being here are the beautiful environment and scenery- mountains, ocean, beaches, vegetation. I was so impressed by it all that I started painting. One thing I wish could be different is having to drive an hour away when I need to do most shopping.

John: Hi, Angela! How’re you doing?
Angela: I’m OK. I just had an interview yesterday. You know, I’ve been looking for a new job for two months and it was the first interview. It’s difficult to find a good job nowadays ... But I see you are in a hurry, I can tell you about it later...
John: You know, I’m leaving today, I always go to my sister’s place for Christmas. She lives next door to our parents and has a bigger house. So we all gather in her house. Still I want to know more about your interview. How did it go?
Angela: I think I did well, but there are so many candidates. Ittasks an interesting job in a big multinational company with a benefits package, medical insurance and such like. I guess chances are probably slim. John: I wouldn’t say that! You have the experience, you work well with people.
Angela: Right. And I like to work in a team. Some people would call me a workaholic.
John: I don’t think so. Workaholics have few friends, if any at all, and no hobbies. You are a different kind of person.
Angela: Thank you, John, it’s very kind of you to say so.
John: Angela, you say ittasks a multinational - is it somewhere overseas?
Angela: Yes, it’s in Russia. It’s exciting!
John: Arentaskt you afraid to go to Russia? It’s very cold there and besides ...
Angela: It’s not colder there than in Canada. I lived in Canada for three years and I find the climate there better than here. If they give me the job I’ll be stationed in Moscow. The Bolshoy Ballet, the Russian tzars’ jewels and all the rest... Fantastic!
John: I’m sure you’ll get the job. You’re so enthusiastic about it.
Angela: But again there’s a lot of candidates. They’ve been interviewing people for three months already.
John: Looks like they are not in a hurry to simply fill the position. They want the right person. They’ve been waiting for you to apply. Everything will work out just fine.
Angela: Thank you. Oh, I’m keeping you talking and talking and you should start on your journey. It’s Christmas tomorrow, everybody gets off work early today so that they can go back home early. Traffic jam starts around three in the afternoon. It’s bumper to bumper.
John: Yes, I know. Well, I’ll leave earlier today then.
Angela: That would be my advice. If you don’t have any important things to deal with, leave as early as possible. Have a good journey!
John: Merry Christmas, Angela!
Angela: Merry Christmas, John!

Interviewer: In our studio today is Tony Stevens, a Grammy- and Emmy-winning actor and comedian, a successful writer of plays and novels, and a musician. How do you feel when you watch yourself on screen?
Tony Stevens: Depressed. [Laughs] I don’t watch myself generally. I do something, see it once, and then I’ll probably never see it again unless it’s an accident. On the screen, you are never quite what you think you are. And you’re never as good looking as the person you’re acting with. So I learned to stay away from it because it was giving me more negative feelings than positive ones.
Interviewer: I think people know you best as an actor and much less as a writer. What is it about writing for you?
Tony Stevens: Writing and acting are complete opposites. One is very physical, it’s done in public, it’s done on the road and in different towns. Writing is quiet and solitary. You tell a story that you’ve been carrying around in your head. It’s also self-expression. But mainly I get a thrill from writing because it’s one of the few things I do that’s not collaborative. Acting is collaborative because you’re working with another actor, and it’s almost like a two-man juggling team. But writing is extremely personal, and that’s the joy of it for me.
Interviewer: As a child, did you like reading? What was your favourite book?
Tony Stevens: Yes, I was an avid reader. When a child is reading a book he usually identifies himself with some of the characters. I think it’s a kind of love. And when you fall in love with a character as a child, you don’t just love them, you want to become them. It happened to me once. The book that I was fascinated with was The Hobbit. I wanted to be Bilbo Baggins quite desperately. For about a year, I demanded a diet of porridge with honey and cream, because this was what Bilbo and the dwarfs ate. Even though I was madly allergic to horses, I attempted to ride ponies.
Interviewer: What books do you think everyone should read while in high school?
Tony Stevens: I remember that when I was in high school I was assigned to read Silas Marner by George Eliot. I can’t remember if I read it or not... When I read it years later, I thought, This book is great!’ But it was too complicated for me when I was a teen, and I wish they had given me Charles Dickens, Pickwick
Papers, for example, which was lively, funny, and understandable. There are so many classics that are entertaining ...
Interviewer: What mistakes do novice writers usually make when they begin?
Tony Stevens: Ittasks not easy to make your manner of writing special, unique, to make your readers follow your story with unfading interest. Your style should be recognisable, but not by using strange, weird words, or making sentences too long. Your reader’s attention will fade away if this happens. Watch for constant repetition of the same words, this is what many young inexperienced writers do. The next important thing is to write what you know.
interviewer: After all these years in the limelight, how do you deal with critics?
Tony Stevens: I was very vulnerable to criticism for many years. I could read a bad review and remember it my whole life. One day, in the early ’90s, my play was opening for the third time in Chicago. This free press paper gave it a terrible, terrible review, saying, ‘It’s horrible this type of play gets put on and keeps other good writers from getting their play put on.’ And I looked at the review and thought, ‘You know what? I wrote a play, and he wrote a review, and that’s the difference between us.’ And I was never bothered by it again.
Interviewer: What made you a star?
Tony Stevens: I went through my entire twenties with little success as a performer. I tried hard, but I had no professional training and little experience. Playing different roles was a challenge, and I didn’t respond to it. At some point I decided to give it up, but I just couldn’t. What you have to do is keep trying to achieve your goal in spite of all difficulties.
