Research on family history shows that a family is an essential part of any society. Families have been changing through the history of humanity. At different times different types of families were common.

If you look around, you’ll see various families. The most common now is a (1) nuclear family, where children live with parents and see the other (2) members of the family only on special occasions. Unfortunately, more and more marriages don’t last long and parents (3) divorce. Then a (4) single-parent family appears in which children have only one parent.

In many countries, especially in rural areas (5) extended families are still widely- spread. In such families several generations live together, including grandparents and even some distant (6) relatives. For many people it is a chance to look after the young and take care of the old and the family meal at weekend is an important event.

The family is the most important social group in all societies. However, the family is changing. The nuclear family is still the main type of family, although different types of small families are becoming more common, such as single-parent families. In Britain about a quarter of all families with young children have only one parent, usually the mother. Over half of all UK marriages end in divorce, so many people marry again, creating new families. In some societies, the nuclear family is part of a larger, extended family, which also includes grandparents and other relatives.

Traditionally, such families worked and lived together. The family educated the children and looked after the old people. In the West, the number of extended families has become smaller because people now often move to different places. Today, most people have jobs outside the family and children go to school. Friends and work colleagues are sometimes more important than family. Many people choose to be childless.
