In my presentation I'd like to compare the Russian and US political systems.
Russia is described as a federal presidential republic. The country adopted a new constitution in a referendum of December 1993. The constitution provides strong powers for the President. The President's power in practice is highlighted by his power to make quite a few appointments of key officials (The PM, the members of the Cabinet, the judges of the Supreme and Constitutional Courts) and issue decrees that have the force of law without legislative review. He or she is elected by direct vote for the period of 6 years. The Law on Presidential Elections requires that the winner receive over 50% of the votes. As for the US, it is also a federal presidential republic consisting of 50 states. The president is elected for the four-year term. According to the 1787 constitution, the officials of any rank should be elected by citizens. The president is both the head of state the head of government of the United States. He or she is the supreme military commander and has the veto right in both countries.
Both countries have three branches of power which work in the regime of checks and balances. I'm going to say a few words about institutions representing each branch of power. In Russia Federal Assembly has all the legislative power. It consists of the State Duma, which is the lower house elected by people, and the Federation Council, which is the upper house formed by 2 senators sent from each federal subject of Russia. The bill approved by the Duma and the Federation Council and signed by the President becomes a law.
The executive power is represented by Government. The Prime Minister who is the head of the Government is appointed by the President and is first-in-line to the presidency in the case of the President's death or resignation. The judicial power belongs to the judges of the Supreme and the Constitutional Courts. Speaking of America, the legislative power of the USA is vested in the Congress which consists of two chambers – the Senate made up from 100 members with 2 senators from each state elected for a four-year term and the House of Representatives comprising representatives from each state, elected for a two-year term. The executive branch of power consists of the President, the Vice-President and the Cabinet. The judicial branch of the government is headed by the Supreme Court which settles disputes between the states and can even veto any law passed by the Congress if it contradicts the Constitution of the USA.
Let's move on to the system of checks and balances which implies that each branch is somehow dependent on the other two. That certainly prevents one branch from gaining too much power or from misusing its powers. For instance, the President may veto any act of Congress, while Congress can pass a law over a veto by a 2/3 vote in each house. The President also has the power to name all federal judges and officials of his or her administration but they must be approved by the Senate.

Давайте перейдем к системе сдержек и противовесов, которая подразумевает, что каждая ветвь так или иначе зависит от двух других. Это определенно мешает одной ветви получить слишком много власти или злоупотреблять своими полномочиями. Например, президент может наложить вето на любой акт Конгресса, в то время как Конгресс может принять закон о преодолении вето путем голосования 2/3 депутатов в каждой палате. Президент также имеет право назначать всех федеральных судей и должностных лиц его администрации, но они должны быть одобрены Сенатом.

The Russian Federation is a presidential (or a constitutional) republic. The president is the head of the state and is elected directly by people. The USA is a federal republic consisting of 50 states. Each state has its own government; it’s like 50 small states. Official of any rank are elected by US citizens. The constitution proclaims a federal system of government which keeps both the states and the federal power from getting too much power. The federal power is located in Washington. It is based on legislative, executive and juridical branches of power. The legislative power is vested in Congress, which consists of two houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The executive branch is headed by the President who is assisted by the Vice President. The judicial branch is made up of Federal district Courts, 11 federal courts and the Supreme Court. There are also 3 branches of power in Russia. The President has much power; he controls all the three branches of power. The federal assembly represents the legislative power. It’s made of the two houses: the Federation Council and the State Duma, which make laws. The Federal government represents the executive branch of power; the juridical branch of power consists of the constitutional court, the Supreme Court and lower courts.

США это федеральная республика, состоящая из 50 штатов. В каждом штате есть свое собственное правительство, это как 50 маленьких стран. Разных официальных лиц избирают граждане США. Конституция провозглашает федеральную систему правления, которая удерживает государственную и федеральную власть от превышения полномочий. Федеральная власть располагается в Вашингтоне. Она базируется на законодательной, исполнительной и юридической ветвях власти. Конгресс наделен полномочиями законодательной власти, и он состоит из двух домов: Сената и Палаты представителей. Исполнительная власть возглавляется президентом, которому помогает вице президент. Юридическая система состоит из федерального окружного суда, 11 федеральных судов и Верховного суда. В России также 3 ветви власти. У Президента намного больше власти, он контролирует все три ветви власти. Федеральное собрание представляет законодательную власть.
