Великие ожидания

"Замолчи!" — раздался страшный голос, когда мужчина вдруг выпрыгнул среди могил со стороны крыльца(porch) церкви (поперти). "Не шуми, маленький чертенок, или я тебе горло перережу!

Страшный(fearful) человек в грубой серой одежде, с тяжелой цепью на ноге. Человек без шапки, и в разбитых башмаках, и с какой-то старой тряпкой(rag) вокруг головы. Человек, который, весь промок(soaked) и полз(smothered) по грязи, покалеченный(lamed) и порезанный острыми камнями, и, которого жгла(stung) крапива и рвал(torn) терновник; он хромал(limped) и трясся(shivered), таращил глаза и хрипел(growled); и громко стучал зубами, когда вдруг он схватил меня за подбородок.

"Ой, не режьте мне горло, сэр!" — в ужасе взмолился(pleaded) я. "Пожалуйста, сэр, не делайте этого!"

"Говори свое имя!" — сказал человек. "Быстро!"

"Пип, сэр."

"Повтори" — переспросил человек, вылупившись на меня. "Громче!"

"Пип. Пип, сэр."

"Покажи, где ты живешь" — сказал человек. "Покажи пальцем!"

Я указал пальцем (pointed) туда, где расположилась(lay) наша деревня, на плоской прибрежной низине среди ольхи и срезанных деревьев, на расстоянии мили или чуть более от церкви. Человек, после того, как глянул на меня, перевернул меня вниз головой и вытряс мои карманы. В них ничего не было, кроме куска хлеба. Когда церковь встала на место, — а он был до того ловкий и сильный, что разом опрокинул ее вверх тормашками, так что шпиль(steeple) церки очутился у меня под ногами, — так вот, когда церковь стала на место, оказалось, что я сижу на высокой надгробной плите(tombstone), дрожа, пока он с жадностью поедает мой хлеб.b

"Ты щенок", — сказал человек, облизываясь. "Какие толстые щеки у тебя!"

Возможно, что они и правда были толстые, хотя я в то время был невелик для своих лет и не отличался силой.

"Вот бы съесть их", — сказал человек и яростно(threatening) мотнул головой, "и я, может, взаправду их съем(I've half a mind to)!"

Я серьезно выразил надежду, что он не сделает этого и крепче(tighter) ухватился за могильный камень, на который он меня посадил; отчасти для того, чтобы не свалиться, отчасти для того, чтобы сдержать слезы.

"Теперь смотри сюда", — сказал человек. "Где твоя мать?"

Потом, когда он несколько раз перевел хмурый взгляд со своей ноги на меня, подошел к моему камню, взял под обе руки и запрокинул меня назад сколько мог дальше; так что его глаза испытующе глядели на меня сверху вниз, а мои беспомощно глядели на него снизу вверх.

"Теперь слушай меня," — сказал он, "до сих пор висит вопрос, оставить ли тебя вживых. Ты знаешь, что такое напильник(file)?

"Да, сэр."

"И ты знаешь, что такое жратва?"

"Да, сэр."

После каждого вопроса он легонько встряхивал меня, чтобы я лучше чувствовал грозящую мне опасность и чувство беспомощности и опасности.

A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg. A man with no hat, and with broken shoes, and with an old rag tied round his head. A man who had been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints2, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars3; who limped, and shivered, and glared and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his head as he seized me by the chin.

"Oh! Dontaskt cut my throat, sir," I pleaded in terror. "Please dontaskt do it, sir."

"Tell us your name!", said the man. "Quick!" "Pip, sir."

"Once more", said the man, staring at me. "Speak up!" "Pip. Pip, sir."

"Show us where you live", said the man. "Pint out the place!"

I pointed to where our village lay, on the flat in-shore4 among the alder-trees and pollards5, a mile or more from the church. The man, after looking at me for a moment, turned me upside down, and emptied my pockets. There was nothing in them but a piece of bread. When the church came to itself - for he was so sudden and strong that he made it go head over heels before me, and I saw the steeple under my feet - when the church came to itself, I say, I was seated on a high tombstone, trembling, while he ate the bread ravenously.

He jumped, made a short run, and stopped and looked over his shoulder.

After darkly looking at his leg and me several times, he came closer to my tombstone, took me by both arms, and me back as far as he could hold me; so that his eyes looked most powerfully down into mine, and mine looked most helplessly up into his. "Now lookee here," he said, "the question being whether I let you live. You know what a file is?"

"Yes, sir."

"And you know what wittles9 is?"

"Yes, sir."

After each question he tilted me over a little more, so as to give me a greater sense of helplessness and danger.

"You get me a file." He tilted me again. "And you get me wittles." He tilted me again. "You bring taskem both to me." He tilted me again.

"Or Itaskll have your heart and liver out." He tilted me again.
