Why Do People Walk in Their Sleep?

There are very few cases of people walking in their sleep. But while sleepwalking is a (1) peculiar form of behaviour, it can be easily explained — there is nothing (2) mysterious about it. To understand it (3) let us start with sleep itself. We need to sleep so that our tired organs will rest and (4) be restored. We still do not have an (5) exact scientific explanation of how and why we sleep, but it (6) is believed that there is a “sleep centre” in the brain which regulates the sleeping and waking of the body.

The blood, in its turn, regulates this sleep centre. The activity of our body all day (7) releases certain substances into the blood and it can function in the way it does.

While working, the sleep centre does two things. The first is to block off part of the brain so that we 110 longer have the will to do anything. We might call this “brain sleep”. The second thing it does is to block off certain nerves in the brain stem so that internal organs and our limbs tall asleep. Let us call this “body sleep”. And normally these two reactions, or kinds of sleep, are (8) connected. But under certain conditions they may be separated! The brain may sleep while the body is (9) awake. This might happen to a person whose nervous system doesn’t react normally. So such people might get out of bed while their brain is asleep and walk about.
