8. Read the paragraphs of the text (A—G) and put them in a logical order.
A. In 1496, at the age of 21, Michelangelo arrived in Rome. A year later he was asked to carve a Pieta. This is a marble statue showing the dead Jesus Christ on the knees of his mother Mary. The finished work, known as the Madonna della Pieta, made him famous. In 1499, Michelangelo returned to Florence and spent two years working on a huge block of marble. From it he carved David, one of the world’s finest and best-known sculptures.
B. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born in 1475. When he was a small child, his mother fell seriously ill and couldn’t take care of him, so the boy was sent to live with a stonecutter and his wife. Michelangelo joked that this was where he learned to love cutting stone into sculpture. At the age of 13, against his family’s wishes, Michelangelo started training as a painter, and a year later he went to study at a school for sculptors. He was so interested in this art that he often forgot to eat and slept on the floor beside his unfinished artwork.
С In 1508, at the beginning of the 16th century, Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome’s Vatican. The ceiling originally had a blue sky with golden stars. The artist agreed and spent most of the next four years creating what turned out to be one of the most astonishing works in the history of art.
D. Once there was a small boy in Florence who loved to watch painters and sculptors at work. He wanted to be an artist, but his father did not like the idea. Little did the man know that his son Michelangelo would become one of the most famous artists in the world.
E. Michelangelo spent many years studying the human body. He even examined dead bodies at a hospital. In the school he understood how important it was to know how human muscles worked and how arms and legs moved.
The things he learned made him able to paint, draw and sculpt with an accuracy that amazed everyone. When he was 20, people spoke of him as a very experienced sculptor.
F. Michelangelo died in 1564, at the age of 88. He was so admired that he became the first European artist whose life story was written during his lifetime. He was even called II Divino which means “the divine one”.
G. In spite of all the time that went into his artwork, Michelangelo was interested in various things and also found time to design buildings, write poems, and even create defensive structures for Florence.
