The food numbers game
Food additives are nothing new. Salt, sugar and vinegar have been added to foods for centuries to preserve them and add flavour. For the past thirty years, however, there has been an increase in the use of artificial additives. Experts estimate that the 1) average person consumes over 6 kilograms a year of these manufactured chemical compounds.
The food industry claims that strict testing is undertaken and only safe additives 2) find their way into our food. In Europe, approved additives are given an ‘E-number’ to show that they are considered safe and to indicate their function.

Can you imagine what it would be like not to have any traffic lights, signs or street markings? Some people might think it would be 1) dangerous but in the Netherlands city planners have decided to give the power of 2) decision back to drivers.
