35 years ago Joan Pine, now in her 60’s, decided that the earth’s resources were too precious to waste and adopted a lifestyle to reflect that belief. Living in a London suburb, her only energy consumption is from a single low-energy light bulb, a kettle and a radio. Her raw-food vegetarian diet consists of seeds, nuts and fruits and to stay warm in winter she wears plenty of clothing, runs and does exercise. Some people may consider her eccentric but her neighbours know that she is one of the healthiest, happiest people in their area.
After 22 years of working for the Post Office, Belinda Charlesworth remembered happier days when she had travelled and lived in a pick-up truck in America. She resigned from her job, bought a Volkswagen van and took to the road again. The van has a built-in sink, fridge and cooker, the back seat folds down into a bed and the roof can be raised to give her enough room to stand up. Like a migratory bird, she follows the warmer weather in America, spending her summers in the north and winters in the south.
When Tracey Beckett moved into a smaller flat she needed to get rid of some of her furniture. A friend told her about freecycling on the Internet, so she signed up and listed everything on the website. Within hours the furniture was gone. She was so impressed with the site that she joined a local freecycle group and now helps to match unwanted goods with people in need. “Instead of going to landfill sites, unwanted goods are now being reused and recycled and everyone benefits,” she explained.
Eric Bloom constantly had aches and pains and his doctor suggested that it might be connected to stress at work. He told Eric to take up a relaxing hobby that would enable him to spend time in the fresh air. He took up gardening and now he grows all his own vegetables and even has a small stall at the weekly farmer’s market where he sells what he doesn’t eat. I’m feeling so much better,” he says “not only because of the exercise but also because of the improved diet.”
Sam Turpin’s life changed completely with the arrival of his baby boy, Dan. With no-one to look after the child, Sam and his wife had to make some hard decisions. His wife was earning more selling garden furniture than he was at the garage where he worked. Giving up his job to stay at home with the baby made financial sense. Sam is one of a growing number of house-husbands, men who choose to take over what has traditionally been a woman’s task. Now he says he wouldn’t go back to the garage even if they offered him a pay rise.
Jane Royle is someone who rejects an economy that she believes is harming the planet. She joined a freegan group living in a converted cinema. They run a small shop, selling what other people have thrown away. She and her group collect anything reusable from bins and accept items that people no longer want. The profits go to charity. Jane even gets her food from supermarket bins. "They throw away anything past its sell-by-date and most of the time there is nothing wrong with it!" she says.
Barry Finch had had enough of getting up first thing in the morning and travelling two hours to work. As a journalist, the pressure of constant deadlines was making him ill, so he decided to downshift. “I have to work of course, but now I freelance and I just email my work.” He says, “I earn less money but that’s not a problem because I spend less. I have more energy now. Most importantly, I have time for my family and this is how life should be.”
