Writing reviews/articles
Reviews
1 a) Read the review and put the paragraphs in the correct order.
A It is a fast-paced film with energetic performances from an all-star cast. The plot is a bit weak but highly entertaining and the performances show how much fun the actors must have had making the film.
B Mamma Mia is the film adaptation of the beautiful hit stage show of the same name. It is a musical starring Meryl Streep as Donna, the ex-hippy mother of Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried. Her three possible fathers, Sam, Harry and Bill, are played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard. It is directed by Phyllida Lloyd.
C Mamma Mia is a must-see film. A surefire hit that is well worth watching. Don’t miss it!
D Sophie and Donna live on a Greek island. Sophie is getting married and wants her dad to give her away but as her mother has never told her who he is, she invites three men who might fit the bill to her wedding without telling her. What will Sophie do? How will Donna deal with this situation? All this takes place in between singing and dancing to the soundtrack of ABBA hit songs from the 1970s.

5 Match the beginnings (1-3) to the endings (A-C). Which techniques have been used in each?
addressing the reader directly
using a quotation
offering a general thought
asking a rhetorical question
Beginnings
1 Despite all the current environmental problems that the animal kingdom has to face and the fact that so many animals are endangered because of our actions, I believe we, the human race, have an innate love of animals. With this in mind, if I had to choose my favourite, I would have to say the tiger.
2 Who amongst us would not jump at the chance to meet their favourite celebrity? I know that I would do almost anything to meet Johnny Depp. Not only is he very handsome, he is also an extremely talented actor.
3 I don’t know about you, but I have a varied taste in music. I like many different genres, artists and bands, so to choose my favourite is rather difficult. There is one exception, however, classical music, and Kin Hubbard summed it up well when he said, “Classical music is the kind we keep thinking will turn into a tune.”
Endings
A I think he deserves to be greatly admired because he is a very talented actor who has worked very hard to achieve his success and he has also donated a lot of money to charity. He leads a varied and interesting life and I think more people could stand to take a leaf out of his book, wouldn’t you agree?
B I think the fact that they are prominent in our ancient mythology and folklore and continue to be chosen as emblems and mascots, as well as appear in popular culture, literature and films, just goes to prove that they have a special place in all our hearts. After all, who doesn’t remember the line from William Blake’s immortal poem, ‘Tiger, tiger, burning bright in the forests of the night’?
C In the end, it doesn’t matter if one person prefers one type of music over another because the world would be a terribly boring place if we all liked the same things, wouldn’t it? I say the more diversity the better because after all, as the old adage says, ‘Variety is the spice of life.’
6 Read the extracts below. Which uses:
narrative techniques?
Descriptive techniques?
1 We were in Chinatown in London in a small restaurant called The Red Dragon. We had a selection of dishes as part of a Chinese banquet including Sechuan Beef, Chow Mein, Chop Suey and I can honestly say I have never eaten anything so delicious in all my life. Ever since then I have loved Chinese food more than any other cuisine.
2 Some may say snooker is boring, but I disagree. I think there is nothing so exciting as when a player tries to make a difficult shot. The tension is tremendous and the audience holds its breath while the player paces up and down contemplating the crucial shot. Then when he plays, the cheers are almost deafening and the crowd roars with appreciation for the player’s skill as the ball rolls into the pocket.
