TRAIN YOUR BRAIN Nouns
Nouns which are always plural:
acoustics, belongings, clothes, earnings, premises, refreshments, thanks, 1) congratulations, 2) surroundings
Nouns which end in -s but have a singular verb:
• subjects of study: economics, linguistics, politics, 3) maths
• sports and games: aerobics, billiards, gymnastics
• other: news
Nouns which can be singular or plural (group nouns):
• names of institutions, companies and teams: the United Nations, Manchester United, 4) Peugeot-Citroen
• other: class, crew, family, government, group, press, public, staff, 5) team, 6) crowd, 7) media, 8) orchestra, 9) audience
The choice of a singular or plural verb depends on how you taskseetask the noun.
• as a single unit: My singing group is quite small.
• as a number of individuals: The group have all got very good voices.
Mind the trap!
Make sure that you use the correct pronouns and possessives with group nouns:
