Morris Dance
There are several types of folk dance, a variety of dances developed by groups or communities, as opposed to being made up by a choreographer. They include: clogging, English country dance, Scottish dance, Irish dance, international folk dance, Maypole dance, Nordic polka dance, square dance, and many more. Folk dances are often performed at social events. The morris dance is one of the most widely known forms of traditional English folk dance.
If you happen to be in England in springtime, you may enjoy a celebration of a very colourful old festival. It used to be a pagan festival when people danced and sang and asked the gods to give them a good year. Today the festival celebrates the beginning of summer and takes place around Spring Bank Holiday, the first Monday in May, when most people dontaskt go to work and theretasks no school.
Morris dancers are easily recognised: they are usually male, they dress in white (or at least in a white shirt), with crossed baldrics or rosettes and ribbons and, most importantly, with pads of bells strapped under their shins, which ring loudly when they move. They wave white handkerchiefs or clash short sticks together as they dance to the sound of a fiddle or melodeon. There is also a taskFooltask, or clown, to entertain the crowd and a taskCake-Bearertask, who carries a whole fruitcake impaled on a sword. Pieces of this cake, which are considered lucky, are presented to members of the audience if they give a donation.
The real explosion of interest to morris dance came with the postwar folk revival in 1960s, and there are still several hundred morris-dance clubs in Britain.

Square dancing is an American pastime. It became popular in America during the time of the California Gold Rush. It was typically done at community gatherings, birthdays, and other celebrations and parties. A popular song to square dance to is Turkey in the Straw , an old farm classic. It especially expanded during the years after World War II. By the 1950s, it was popular all over the country. Square dancing consists of a host who calls out the movements, and several pairs of people, normally a man and a woman, called couples. It s an interesting fact that president Ronald Reagan signed an Act of Congress in 1982 making square dancing the National Folk Dance of America. This actually explains why so many schools teach square dancing in physical education and organize square dance competitions.

Some people are keen on what is called dance sport. It s not just dancing for fun, the element of competition is very strong here. Dance sport grew out of ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing started as far back as the 16th century in France. Later, the Viennese waltz became the ballroom hit. This dance was based on folk dances of southern Germany and Austria and later came to the US and England. The rumba, which came from Cuba, became popular in the US and Europe in the 1930s. The Spanish paso doble originated in the 1930s. The popular dances in the 1930s and 40s were swing and jive. In the 50s many Latin dances, like mambo and cha-cha, became popular internationally. Also there was the samba from Brazil. So, today the main styles are International Standard and International Latin.

Ballet is considered an art. Many people believe that ballet originates from Russia, because of the great number of famous dancers from the Bolshoi or Mariinsky theatres who performed exceptionally worldwide. The truth is that ballet was first performed in Italy in the early 1600s. The fi rst ballet school was opened in France, in 1661. It was started by King Louis XIV, and only men were allowed to dance. Today it sounds incredible, but women were finally allowed to ballet dance in 1681, 20 years after the first public performance. The ladies wore ankle length dresses. Imagine having to dance with long dresses on! Most of the original ballet movements are used today, with their French names. Two of my girlfriends take ballet lessons and dream of going professional. I hope their dream comes true.

Many people today enjoy dancing. It s a form of socializing, and it s often called social dances . Modern dance (how we dance today) is very carefree and fun. Modern dance is easy to do, just swing it. It doesn t require the mastery of ballroom dancing. Many different people of all ages, shapes, and sizes gather to dance to many different types of music like Rap, Rock, Country, Pop, and Soft Rock. There is not really a name for the dances these people do, because everyone has their own style. But I guess I can give you a few names: The Bump, The D.J., The Cha-Cha Slide, The Macarena, The Boogie and The Train. You probably know some of these dances. It s a lot of fun to dance. Next time you get the chance, go for it! Just remember you can t use the excuse I can t dance , because everyone can!

Have you ever thought that dancing can help build up your energy, reduce stress or burn calories? Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Florida have determined that dancing does it all. You don t have to exercise in a gym, go to the swimming pool or sweat on the running track. You can simply have fun in the company of friends and move to some music you love. According to modern scientific research, dancing definitely helps to improve your muscle tone, strength and coordination. It can also strengthen the bones in your hips and legs. Some facts are really amazing. For instance, researchers have established that some square dancers covered five miles worth of walking while dancing! Moreover, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, dancing lowers blood pressure and risk for heart disease.
