Yesterday I took part in the discussion board — it’s a forum, part of our online learning programme. I do love this form of work — I can meet other students and instructors. We discuss course topics and related issues. The discussion board is a great opportunity to express opinions and share ideas. A discussion forum is a must-do for many students enrolled in an online college degree programme. It is a required activity and makes up part of the students’ grade.
Speaker В
The forum is so much better than a face-to-face class! I can prepare for it in advance and step in when I am ready. You know, some of my friends are ready to answer questions immediately, but I prefer to read the responses of others first. When you are in the fi rst years of study you feel more comfortable discussing topics online after reading what more experienced students have written. Besides, we can revisit past topics during the course… Our opinions may change in the course of discussion!
Speaker С
I am a shy person, it’s not easy for me to raise a hand and speak in front of a large group of students and the instructor! That’s why I love discussion boards! There is no anxiety, no one is looking at me. Like many other new students, I feel free to express my views and no one will look down on me. I know it’s just stage fright and everyone in a class may be very friendly, but I do perform better without many sets of eyes on me.
Speaker D
My fellow students and I often take part in online discussion forums. I think there is a greater opportunity for us to interact with one another than there is in a face-to-face setting. Interestingly, these forums help us as a group, we feel intellectually united, and the team spirit grows. We see eye to eye as a group, and our teachers value us as a class. We are committed to learning and share our learning goals.
Speaker E
In a discussion board it’s so easy to give reference to what you’ve read, the article you’ve found or the book that you have borrowed arguments from. This happens partly because we have more time to think and organize our thoughts. The references and sources are very important for a well-rounded argument. In a face-to-face class this is not always possible, actually never possible.
Speaker F
My experience with forums is that they are much better than face-to-face classes. First, they are available at all times of day or night. I can schedule my day so there is time for school and work and family demands. A big plus — the forum is accessible from any Internet connection via the World Wide Web. I even took part in it once when I was sick. My friends who were travelling at the time of the discussion could log in too!

Alice: Kevin, I’m hungry. I’d like to have a snack. Let’s go somewhere and have a bite.
Kevin: McDonald’s is the best place, Alice. It’s just a 5-minute walk. I like McDonald’s.
Alice: So, it’s true. Yesterday I read the results of a survey. You know, Kevin, a lot of people say that teenagers in Britain don’t eat good food. There are special television programmes trying to encourage teenagers and young people to eat better food. But still, according to the survey, many young people prefer hamburgers and other fast food.
Kevin: Fast food is OK! I mean, you hear people saying it’s all junk food, but most of the time it tastes good. Though I wouldn’t want to live off it all the time!
Alice: You should be more careful about what you eat, Kevin. Try healthy food: brown rice, wholemeal bread, muesli, organically grown fruit and fresh meat. That’s what I eat.
Kevin: Alice, muesli and fruit don’t fill you up. Hamburgers do. They’re good food! They fill you up; and that’s what food’s supposed to do, isn’t it? I mean there’s meat, vegetables and bread and cheese; as far as I’m concerned, that’s a pretty balanced diet. I mean, my mum says it’s all junk, but frankly I can’t really see what makes it any different from the stuff she cooks. I mean bread’s bread, isn’t it, and steak’s steak, isn’t it?
Alice: But that’s not the point, is it? I mean the thing about junk food is that it’s all deep-frozen, it’s never fresh ...
Kevin: How do you mean? My sister Mary is not all that keen on hamburgers — she says they just make you fat — but when we go to a McDonald’s or somewhere like that, she gets salads and other things ... And you can’t get deep-frozen salads ...
Alice: Well, maybe not the salads ... but the rest’s all deep-frozen industrial stuff .
Kevin: But so’s most of the food you get these days ...
Alice: It isn’t at all! What about all the organic stuff, and fresh meat, and things like that?
Kevin: Alice, go to a supermarket and see what people are buying. Few people buy fresh vegetables, fresh meat and wholemeal bread. In most supermarket trolleys you see tins, packets of highly processed food or deep-frozen stuff . Most English families prefer convenience foods, because working couples have little time for anything other than their jobs.
Alice: Don’t you eat fresh food at home then?
Kevin: Yeah, of course, from time to time; but most of the time my mum does stuff out of the deep freeze. It’s good!
Alice: What sort of stuff ?
Kevin: All sorts of stuff . Pizzas, fish fingers, lasagna, things like that.
Alice: You’re not really suggesting that deep-frozen pizza’s as good as the real thing, are you?
Kevin: What d’you mean ‘the real thing’? Deep-frozen pizza’s perfectly real, and fi ne by me ... once it’s been heated up, I mean! Anyway, who eats homemade pizza? No one does! Do you?
Alice: Well, my grandma is Italian, and she makes real Italian pizza. Not very often, but still …
Kevin: Pizza has become international. People all over the world like eating it. Homemade Italian pizza must be something special … I wish I could try it …

Текст аудирования:
Interviewer: Good morning! This is the World of Sports programme, and today’s guest is Tom Smith, the best and most well-known skateboarder in the world. I’m going to interview Tom about his life and career. What profession would you have chosen if you hadn’t become a skater?
Tom Smith: When I started and turned professional, I still had to think of a way to earn my living. There was no money in skateboarding. So I just figured I would probably do something else. Since I was always focused on computers I thought, at some point — if I had to — I probably would go into video editing or web design or something, which I still love. So had I not skated that’s probably what I would have done.
Interviewer: Did your teachers treat you differently because you were a professional athlete?
Tom Smith: [Laughing] No, not at all. I actually had a rough time in senior year when I started getting a lot of travel opportunities and I’d be gone for a weekend to some big competition and miss either a Friday or the Monday. Even though I was making up the work, they started marking me down for my absences. I actually had a teacher yell at me and say that I had to figure out what I was going to do with my life, that I couldn’t just keep riding my skateboard.
Interviewer: Did you have any friends in school?
Tom Smith: Yeah, I had some friends, but my parents moved around, so my only consistent friends were at the skate park. I changed high schools four times, so it was a little rough, but at the same time I was sort of an outcast because I was a skater, so to go to a new school was no big deal.
Interviewer: When you were in high school, what was your peers’ attitude to your interest and success in skateboarding?
Tom Smith: When I fi rst started skating it was quite popular, and all my friends were doing it. Then I started improving, and feeling like it was the only thing I really excelled at. Then pretty much everyone quit, but I stuck with it, and they saw me as a relic. Because it was like, “You still skate? That’s so last year.” I just couldn’t give it up and eventually broke away from my friends from school.
Interviewer: Is it tough to be great friends with a group of guys and then compete against them?
Tom Smith: It’s never too serious with us. In our sport, it’s very subjective. If you do your best and your buddy does his best, it’s up to whoever thinks your art is cooler. It’s not like there’s a definitive winner where they score who went the highest or the fastest. So it’s easier to be friends with your rivals in our sport.
Interviewer: There were some tough times in your brilliant career. What did you learn from them?
Tom Smith: I just learned that I can’t take things for granted. It did seem like there was never going to be an end to my success, but then it dropped so suddenly that I realized I can’t just take it for granted. But I never quit skating.
Interviewer: I read your autobiography and learned you used to play the violin. You gave it up for skateboarding?
Tom Smith: I miss the violin, actually. I literally did give it up for skating, because I felt I could only have one extra-curricular activity, and I felt my skating was improving faster than my violin skills. But I just recently got a new violin, so I’m going to try to take it up again. Might be a little late, but still fun.
Interviewer: If you addressed high school students, what message would you convey?
Tom Smith: The most important message, I think, is to believe in yourself, you know, and go after whatever goals or aspirations you have with confidence. If you go at them halfheartedly, or only because someone thinks you should, then you’re not going to accomplish what you want. It’s more about saying, “Okay, I can do this; I have the resources; I have the experience.” That is more or less my philosophy in skating. I don’t really try something unless I’m already convinced I can do it. That’s probably my message.
