2 Complete points 1-7 with verbs and phrases from the box to make habits. Then answer the questions.
take; drum; leave; talk; fiddle with; lose; spend ages
1 leave dirty dishes in the sink, the top off the toothpaste
2 spend ages in the bathroom, on the phone
3 talk to yourself, behind someone’s back
4 take things without asking, people for granted

3 Look back at habits in Exercise 8. Tell your partner about people you know who have or used to have any of them.
A My brother’s really disgusting – he’ll clean his teeth and leave the top off the tootpaste.
B Yes, I know, my sister used to do that too – I’m glad she’s left home!
A My mum’s always forgetting where she’s put her glasses – I think it’s quite endearing.
B Do you? That kind of thing annoys me.
4 Work in pairs. Student A, look at page 136. Student B, look at page 137.
5 In groups, discuss these questions.
• How have you changed in the last five years?
• How have your relationships with other members of your family changed?

Sam: Guess who I saw at the club last night?
Gabby: I don’t know. Kylie Minogue?
Sam: Oh come on, Gabby, be serious. You’ll never believe it! It was Jack’s mum and dad. They were dancing like teenagers — and they must be at least 50!
Gabby: So? What’s wrong with that? I think it’s great!
Sam: Great? I think it’s ridiculous! Clubbing at their age!
Gabby: Oh, I wouldn’t say that, Sam. Look at Mick Jagger and Pink Floyd — and all the other bands from the 70s and 80s. I know they’re called the ‘wrinkly rockers’, but they’re still going strong — and some of them are over 60!
Sam: Yes, but that’s not the point! Jack’s mum and dad aren’t famous musicians!
Gabby: True. But they used to like dancing to Rolling Stones music when they were young — so why shouldn’t they do it now?
Sam: Because clubs are for young people! Who wants to go clubbing with their mum and dad — I certainly don’t!
Gabby: No, neither do I. I’d never thought of that. But I still think everybody’s got the right to go to a club if that’s what they want to do.
Sam: Well, if you ask me, anybody over 25 should be banned!
Gabby: Oh, come on Sam — that’s rubbish! You’re not serious, are you?
Sam: Yes, I am! We all have the right to our opinions. You and I are just not on the same wavelength.
Gabby: You’re telling me!

Mum: Going out, Julie?
Julie: Yes Mum — see you later …
Mum: Hang on — won’t you freeze in that top? I think it’s a bit short.
Julie: So do I, Mum! But it’s the fashion!
Mum: Well, maybe … but I’m not totally convinced. And your trousers look as if they’ll fall down any minute.
Julie: Yeah, I know Mum ... but they won’t.
Mum: I hope not. I can’t keep up with the fashions these days. It’s all so different to when I was your age.
Julie: Well, to be honest, Mum, I don’t think that’s true. What about those photos of you in the 80s? You all looked pretty weird to me.
Mum: Mmm … I have to admit you’ve got a point there. Our clothes were rather ‘way out’ at the time — and the hair! When I see photos now, I can’t believe how long it was!
Julie: Exactly! Every generation has its own ‘look’ — and it doesn’t seem weird to them, does it?
Mum: No — you’re absolutely right, darling. It doesn’t!
Julie: So now that we’ve agreed about that, can I go?
Mum: Yes, of course — have a good time!
Julie: Thanks Mum. Bye …
Mum: Julie!
Julie: Yes, Mum?
Mum: I still think you should take your jacket. The weather forecast says …
Julie: OK, OK, Mum, I hear what you’re saying but … You’re right, I’ll take it …
