Dan: Yeah, OK.
Louise: So John, was the man a criminal, or strange in some way?
John: Well, that’s two questions! But No is the answer to both! He looked perfectly normal.
Louise: Right … so we have to look at it from another angle.
Dan: The barman could have been playing a joke on him.
Louise: Not very funny, though, is it? Why didn’t he just say, ‘Sorry, we haven’t got any water’? He needn’t have pointed a gun at him!
Dan: Yes, you’re probably right. Maybe the barman already knew him?!
Louise: And the barman might have been insulted by the man in some way.
Dan: Yes, that could be it. Or they may have been working in the same place and the barman was in terrible trouble.
Louise: And the man could have helped him — but he refused. So the barman lost his job.
Dan: And now he wants revenge!
Louise: Yes, but hang on. The man couldn’t have been threatened by the barman because he said ‘Thank you’ and walked out.
Dan: Yes, but the barman could have wanted just to scare him.
Louise: But the man didn’t drink the water either — or did he? We’d better ask.
Dan: OK. John, did he drink the water?
John: No, he didn’t. I think you’re on the right track now.
Louise: OK … let’s think. Why would he ask for water? And why would the barman want to scare him?
Dan: Got it!!! He had hiccups!!!
Louise: Of course — that’s it! That’s why the barman pointed the gun at him — to give him a fright. To stop the hiccups!

Dan: A man was found in the middle of a field. He was holding a broken match. What happened? This one’s tricky. Perhaps he had a bomb and when he lit it, it exploded too soon and killed him.
Louise: Yes, but why was he in a field?
Dan: Well, he might have been testing the bomb there.
Louise: But if the bomb had exploded, there wouldn’t be much of him left — let alone a matchstick!
Dan: Yes, I suppose so.
Louise: Anyway, we don’t know how he died. It might have been an accident or he may have been murdered.
Dan: Yes, he could have been stabbed or strangled!
Louise: Mmm … Shall we ask for a clue?
Dan: All right. John, was he murdered?
John: No, he wasn’t.
Dan: Right — so it could have been an accident.
Louise: We’d better check again. John, was it an accident?
John: It’s a bit difficult to answer that. Think about the broken match …

John: But it’s the right answer, Dan!
Dan: What! Really?
John: Yes, the balloon was too heavy and was going to crash. Unfortunately, the man drew the short match and had to jump.
Louise: I don’t believe it! It was just a crazy thought …
John: That’s lateral thinking for you. You’re both very good at it! Well done.
