DJ: If you’re lucky enough to visit the beautiful city I of Barcelona, one of the things you cannot miss is its incredible architecture. It is a city fortunate enough to have some of the most famous buildings in the world. Yes. I’m talking about the buildings designed by Spanish architect. Antoni Gaudi (1). With us in the studio today to tell us about these extraordinary buildings we have Arthur Green, a many time visitor to Barcelona and member of The Architecture Appreciation Society.
Arthur: Hello.
DJ: Arthur, what exactly is it that makes these buildings so extraordinary?
Arthur: Well, for a start there are no others like them in the world. The rich design on every square inch of the buildings both inside and out is impressive (2).
DJ: Do you have a favourite?
Arthur: I have several. The Casa Vicens, which was the first building Gaudi designed and built, is still extraordinary to this day. Gaudi was only 24 when he designed this beautiful building (3).
Manuel Vicens commissioned the very young and totally inexperienced Gaudi to build a summer residence for his family in 1878. And Gaudi designed and built a brick building decorated with bright, colourful tiles. This was very appropriate as the owner, Manuel Vicens, was himself a brick and tile manufacturer.
DJ: Yes, it looks impressive. What’s it like inside? 1 Arthur: It’s even more impressive than the outside. The ceilings are not your regular flat ceilings (4). They are very detailed and covered in carved, painted wood. You can imagine the work that went into building this house.
DJ: Yes! How long did it take to build?
Arthur: Five years. (5) from 1883 to 1888.
DJ: Amazing! And to think Gaudi was only 24 when he designed it...
Arthur: Let me tell you about one of my other favourite Gaudi buildings. This one’s called Casa Batllo. It’s a very strange building as it is easily also a sculpture. The decoration of the building both inside and out reminds us of various animals (6). The pillars on the outside look like the feet of giant
elephants and the roof looks like a completely different animal...
DJ: ... the roof looks like the backbone of a gigantic dinosaur (7). Could that be right?
Arthur: Yes, it is! And look at the staircase inside, I it’s also carved so that it looks like the backbone of
a dinosaur.
DJ: Wow! it really is extraordinary.
Arthur: I’m glad you think so.
DJ: The Architecture Appreciation Society runs a one-day Gaudi walking tour of Barcelona, doesn’t it? What time does it start and how much does it cost?
Arthur: It starts at 8.00 am every Friday (8). Everyone meets outside the Casa Mila, an apartment block also designed by Gaudi. And it’s free. So, it won’t cost you a thing to attend (9).
DJ: That’s good to hear. So if you are ever in Barcelona, you won’t want to miss this tour. Well, thank you, Arthur, for being with us today ...
Arthur: Thank you.
