Excursions in cyberspace
School trips have never been so exciting!
1 Where did you go on your last school excursion? Maybe you went to a nearby museum, or did you go for a stroll to the local art gallery? If you were really lucky, perhaps you were all taken to the theatre! Excursions have always been part of the school year, A but they seldom get more adventurous than this. Most schools dontaskt have the money or time to take their students to more exciting places. However, for children at lemmington High, school trips have changed forever.
2 This year alone, lucky I emmingtonians have seen Pisa in Italy; theytaskve taken a tour of the Louvre in Paris; theytaskve even visited a school in Ulan Bator. And the school year hasntaskt finished yet! They have plans to meet children in the Outback of Australia В and to interview a famous footballer in his own home. But how? The answer is videoconferencing.
3 These, you see, are virtual excursions and they take place in taskcyberspacetask. The children haventaskt been to Italy and they haventaskt flown to Mongolia. Theytaskve seen these places on a large computer screen in their own classroom. However, as teacher Ieonard Bowen explains, C this isntaskt the same as watching a documentary on TV taskWith videoconferencing, learners experience these far-flung places for real.task says Bowen, who leads the videoconferencing project at Lemmington High. taskA videoconference is a live video link over the Internet. During a conference, our students can see and speak to real people almost anywhere else in the world.task Indeed, the only requirement is that the other school, museum or footballertasks house, also has videoconferencing equipment.
4 But are these virtual excursions as useful as real ones? taskCertainly’, says Bowen. taskPupils learn about other cultures by communicating with people who live there. Ittasks an amazing experience for everyone involved.task And ittasks not just the teachers who are enthusiastic. The school has been using the system for a year now. D and the pupils have become quite addicted. "Wetaskve been doing it about once a month, but wetaskd do it every day if we could, task says 14 year old Shelly Brookes. Wetaskve learnt a lot. but I also feel like wetaskve made friends around the world.task Another advantage, of course, is that virtual excursions are not affected by the weather. If ittasks been raining non stop for the last week, thattasks not a problem!
5 Not surprisingly. E other schools have been trying videoconferencing too. One, for example, has interviewed researchers in a camp in Antarctica. Another has spoken to a group of native American children from their school in California. The possibilities are endless
6 How can your school start videoconferencing? Well, first of all you need the right equipment. Some systems cost almost 5000 pounds, but these are the very best cameras and screens available. However, F you dontaskt need to buy state-of-the-art equipment, as Leonard Bowen explains. ‘Our screen is quite big, but ittasks connected to a cheap computer. Our internet connection isntaskt the fastest available. The whole system has cost under 600 pounds. Cheap, but effective.task
7 The wonders of technology have truly brought the world into the classroom. Perhaps youtaskve been wondering G if the traditional school trip will disappear forever. Leonard Bowen, who has worked with children for over 20 years, doesntaskt think theytaskre history quite yet. Wetaskve been doing them for years, task he says, ‘and kids still enjoy them.task After all, you cantaskt buy a souvenir through a video screen!
