3A. Read an American teachertasks account of an excursion she had in Russia and find the answers to these questions.
During my stay in Russia last spring I was often sulking about not having any break for the second year in a row. Then, out of nowhere, Womentasks Day appeared. I believe it was the Goddess of Women who granted me, together with the rest of our group, an exciting three-day, two-night excursion to Vladimir and Suzdal.
You know that Womentasks Day is a holiday that is celebrated each year on March 8th in Russia and around the world. Families and friends shower women with flowers, gifts, cards, and attention on this day. We have a similar festival in America, Mothertasks Day, which is celebrated on November 30th, only all women are honored in Russia.
My mates for this trip included seven Russian students, eight American students, a tour guide, and a bus driver. We started our journey at noon on Womentasks Day, March 8th. It took us four hours on a comfortable charter bus to get out of Moscow and through Russiatasks countryside arrive in Vladimir.
It was a really wonderful trip also because it was everyonetasks first trip to Vladimir and Suzdal, including the Russian students. These towns were amazingly beautiful with many churches and histories that span a millennium. We heard a bell concert at a monastery and had an excellent tour guides who detailed the history, buildings, and artwork. We found an array of inexpensive and quality souvenirs in both towns and also got to experience several traditional Russian meals during the trip.
The weekend turned out completely magical with sights of glistening snow, cozy villages, and horse-drawn sleighs. This look into Russiatasks past left us with many memories to treasure and pictures to share with our friends and families back in America.

RUSSIAN LACQUER BOXES
You have definitely seen them in any souvenir shop as they are probably the most popular kind of Russian souvenirs. They are beautiful Russian handmade wonders — Palekh lacquer boxes.
After the Great October Revolution icon artists stopped using religious themes in their paintings but their artistic tradition didntaskt disappear completely. Russian village artists borrowed such features as the use of gold and bright colors and extremely decorative designs from icon paintings and started to use them on wooden boxes. Today the most common picture themes come from traditional Russian fairy tales. You can often see a picture of three horses, carrying the sledge over snow on the boxes. Have you ever thought that they represent the winter months — December, January, and February — and symbolise the passing of winter?
The boxes are not very big, they look shiny and feel smooth but the process of making is very long and difficult. Sheets of cardboard are glued together and pressed into forms first. Then, the papier-mache forms are dried, dipped in linseed oil and dried again using special heating equipment. This preparatory stage takes about one month. After that the boxes are polished by hand using sand. Then the craftsmen attach hinges, joints, and clasps to them. They cover the boxes with black paste and dry the boxes for 24 hours. At this stage the forms are polished again. Each box is then coated with lacquer 2 or 3 times, each coat should dry for 24 hours before another coat can be applied. All the boxes become red on the inside, black on the outside.
The painting begins at last. First, artists make a sketch of their painting on the box. Then they use squirrel-hair brushes to apply egg-emulsion tempera and gold leaf to the surface of the boxes. Sometimes the artists use magnifying glasses as they work because it is quite difficult for them to see tiny pictures clearly. It is interesting that the gold leaf is polished with a wolftasks tooth.
You will never find the two boxes that are the same as the character behind each box is expressed through its own unique shape and painting. That is why these priceless items have become very popular Russian souvenirs.
