WHAT IS TOURISM
People have travelled (1) since ancient times in search of food, fresh water, fertile land and safety from enemies. As communities became more productive, trade became one of the main stimuli for travelling. But travelling for pleasure or new (2) experiences is a phenomenon of the recent past. Travel has always been dependent on (3) technology. New developments in technology have always (4) offered new means of travel.
Nowadays tourism brings more foreign currency to Britain than any (5) other industry, including manufactured goods, although it is (6) less than three hundred years old. The 19th century can be counted as a starting point of organised tourism, but it is only in the 1950s, with more aircraft available, that it started to gain its present status as the world’s leading industry.
Some travellers from the (7) Middle Ages onwards could be considered tourists, but there is every reason to suppose that the history of tourism really started in Britain in the 18th century. A number of factors, including the availability of leisure time and money and a generally accepted view of travelling as a useful activity allowed the British aristocracy to (8) spend summertime at resorts such as Bath and Cheltenham. The resorts responded by building pump rooms, assembly halls, restaurants, clubs and coffee shops, so (9) providing the first models for the leisure industry.
A series of revolutionary (10) developments took place in the 19th century. As intensive construction resulted in a very efficient railway (11) network by the 1860s, most seaside towns became easily reached from any other part of the country. A (12) variety of day trips was being offered by the railway companies. They also used extra (13) attractions such as illuminations, music bands and serving snacks to bring more visitors. In 1841, Thomas Cook chartered a train to take tourists from Loughborough to Leicester. This modest business grew into one of the largest travel agencies in the world. He is often (14) regarded as the inventor of package tours.
Now tourism supports a vast number of (15) jobs and involves close co-operation with other economic sectors, such as agriculture, manufactured goods, electronics, transport and building.
