Activity 5
GROUP DISCUSSION: YOUR IDEA OF A HOLIDAY?
Work in groups of 5—6.
a) Study the task instructions.
You need to work out a plan for a holiday trip for your class.
The trip is scheduled for the summer and is to be financed by the City Council.
What you need to decide is
• the place you want to go to;
• whether you want a package trip or a camping holiday.
b) Steps to follow.
1 Choose a MODERATOR who conducts the discussion. He / She announces the topic, gives the floor to the speakers, brings the discussion to an end and announces the final decision.
2 Choose a SECRETARY who records on paper / board / tablet all the ideas, arguments and counterarguments expressed by the speakers, and helps the MODERATOR to collect the results of the discussion.
3 Look at the pictures and the brief descriptions of the places from a tourist agency website. Choose between the two destinations or suggest an alternative. Feel free to browse the Internet for the relevant information.
4 Discuss and decide on the holiday type:
• a package holiday (the hotel, travel, food, entertainments provided by a travel agency);
• a camping holiday.
5 Listen to the MODERATOR presenting the result of the discussion and confirm your agreement.
6 Write a letter to your Headmaster to inform him / her about your collective decision. Make sure you use formal style.
Stolby National Park is one of the most famous in Russia. It was founded in 1925 in order to protect the unique natural environment and preserve the stunning views for further generations. And the views are really stunning! Stolby is a place of magnificent rocks scattered across the taiga.
The national park receives the greatest flow of tourists from late June to October, but it is a great place to visit all year round. In summer time, you can enjoy hiking suitable for all fitness levels, an adventure park, and rock climbing. And in snow season, skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing will take your breath away. Some tourists prefer to turn their time in Stolby into a real chance to get back to nature. They stay in camps, away from popular tourist paths. Others prefer the comfort of the hotels, which are well accessible too, as the large city of Krasnoyarsk is in very close vicinity.
You can find the name of Valday in any tourist guide, as the place is very popular with tourists. Valday is a town in Novgorod Oblast in Central Russia. But people often use it to refer to the whole region, including Valdaysky National Park with Lake Valdayskoye and Lake Seliger. The fact that the national park has the status of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve proves that the flora and fauna of the place is unique. Indeed, it’s a world of lakes and birch forests where you can still find bears, wolves, lots of other animals and lots of species of birds.
Whatever your idea of a perfect holiday is, you’ll find it in Valday. Different music festivals and youth cultural events are held on the lakes.
There are recreational facilities for families with small children. History lovers will enjoy visiting the old monasteries with their unique architecture. Lodgings of any type from tents to luxurious hotels are available as the region is one of the most popular tourist destinations and can boast a developed infrastructure.

A package tour means we won’t have to worry about anything.
It could be cheaper to buy a tour from a travel agency.
If we travel as package tourists, we won’t have any sense of adventure.
I’d prefer we arranged our activities ourselves and didn’t just follow the guide’s instructions. etc.
