7 Work in pairs. Read the chemistry vocabulary and their definitions. Suggest the Russian equivalents for them.
Matter is a general term which refers to anything that occupies space and has mass.
An atom is the smallest unit of matter that has all of the chemical properties of a certain chemical element.
A chemical element is a ‘pure’ form which consists of only one kind of atoms (with identical atomic number) and has specific chemical and physical properties; it cannot be broken down into other substances through ordinary chemical reactions (ex. gold (Au) is a chemical element; it consists only of the atoms of gold)
A molecule is a unit that is composed of two or more atoms; the atoms are held together due to chemical bonds; the atoms can be of one element or of several different elements.
A proton is a particle in an atom with a positive electrical charge.
A neutron is a particle in an atom with no electrical charge.
An electron is a particle in an atom with a negative electrical charge.
An atomic nucleus is the centre of the atom; it consists of protons and neutrons.
An atomic number is the number of protons in an atomic nucleus; it defines the relative position of an element in the periodic table, in which the elements are arranged in accordance with their nuclear charge increase.
