Большой старый питон наслаждался греться на солнце на самой вершине высокого камня. Он провел там дни и недели - это был прекрасный способ провести время. Лениво его глаза следовали за большими птицами, летящими высоко в небе. Ему нравилось наблюдать за ними. Большие и впечатляющие, они плавно парили почти рядом с ним. Он чувствовал свое единство с птицами. У них было много общего, не так ли? Как и он, они были далеки от подземелья. Как и он, они были гораздо ближе к небу, чем все те несчастные существа, которые жили у подножия скалы. Оставалось только одно, что отличало его от сообщества, и это всегда его очень огорчало. Да, они могли летать. Они знали, как делать то, что он никогда не сможет испытать. Летящий, находясь в воздухе, без земли которая держит-, какое бы это было чувство?

В это время легкое перо, очевидно оброненное одной из крупных птиц, медленно опускалось мимо него. Оно спускалось постепенно и почти вертикально, когда воздух был абсолютно неподвижным. Питон не мог оторвать глаз от него. Он напомнил ему что-то. Да, это было в школе. Питон не любил школу, но его мать настояла. Правда, он не извлек много пользы из этого опыта. Но это перо. это было связано с теми старыми школьными днями как-то. Да, питон вспомнил об этом сейчас: учитель физики когда-то продемонстрировал увлекательный эксперимент с классом. Он принес длинную стеклянную колбу, чтобы показать классу, и сказал, что внутри есть вакуум. Но питон не видел никакого вакуума, просто белое перо и серый камень. Учитель повернул трубку вверх ногами, и, естественно, оба предмета начали падать. Удивительно, но камень дошел до нижней части трубки в тот же момент, что и перо! Это произвело впечатление на молодого питона и застряло в его памяти, но это не привело к желанию заглянуть в дело дальше. Теперь питон пожелал, чтобы он был более любопытным в физике и время от времени задавался вопросом. Разве этот эксперимент не означал, что когда кто-то был в воздухе без твердой почвы внизу, тело могло бы парить точно так же, как легкое перо. Даже такое большое тело, как его собственное, питона? Кажется, что птицы давно обнаружили эту тайну и держали ее ото всех. Он должен попробовать это для себя.

Впервые в жизни питон почувствовал возбуждение. Он продолжал смотреть вниз со скалы, все еще глядя на крошечное белое пятно, которое было пером далеко внизу.

The big old python enjoyed basking in the sun on the very top of the high rock. He spent days and weeks there — it was a wonderful way to pass the time. Lazily his eyes followed the big birds flying high in the sky. He enjoyed watching them. Large and impressive, they floated smoothly almost beside him. He felt a kind of unity with the birds. They had lots in common, didn’t they? Like him, they were far from the ground below. Just like him, they were much closer to the sky than all those miserable creatures that lived at the foot of the rock. There was only one thing that kept him apart from their community, and it always left a strange bitter aftertaste in his mouth. Yes, they could fly. They knew how to do something he would never be able to experience. Flying, being in the air without the ground supporting you — how would it feel?

Just then, a light feather, obviously dropped by one of the large birds, moved slowly past him. It was descending gradually and almost vertically as the air was absolutely still. The python couldn’t take his eyes off it. It reminded him of something. Yes, it was at school. The python didn’t like school, but his mother had insisted. True, he hadn’t benefited much from the experience. But that feather. it was connected to those old school days somehow. Yes, the python recalled it now: the physics teacher had once demonstrated a fascinating experiment to the class. He had brought a long glass tube to show the class and said that there was a vacuum inside. But the python didn’t see any vacuum, just a white feather and a grey stone. The teacher turned the tubes upside down and, naturally, both objects started to fall. Amazingly, the stone reached the bottom of the tube at the same moment the feather did! This impressed the young python and stuck in his memory but it didn’t lead to any desire to look into the matter further. Now the python wished he had been more curious about physics and had bothered to ask questions once in a while. Didn’t that experiment mean that when anybody was in the air with no firm ground below, a body could float just like a light feather.even such a big body, like his own, the python’s? The birds seemed to have discovered this secret very long ago and kept it from everyone. He must try it for himself.

For the first time in his life the python felt excited. He kept looking down from the rock, his eyes still on the tiny white spot that was the feather far below him.
