120 Read the text and decide what the main purpose of the agreement is.
Canada ratified; 3,3% of CO2 emissions
USA did not ratify; 38% of CO2 emissions
European Union; 30% of CO2 emissions
Russian Federetion; 17% of CO2 emissions
Japan; 9% of CO2 emissions
Australia; 2% of CO2 emissions
On December 11, 1997, an important international agreement originated in Kyoto, Japan. It was aimed at the reduction in the carbon dioxide emissions by the developed nations and the European Union.
It is called the Kyoto Protocol and is an addition to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change.
The countries that recognise this agreement agree to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other harmful greenhouse gases. Industrialised countries have identified reduction targets and can engage in emissions trading or Joint Implementations. There is the third instrument the countries can use, the Clean Development Mechanism.
The agreement came into force on February 16, 2005, after the ratification by Russia. Now there are 187 countries, who have ratified this Protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol is a small but significan step to dealing with climate change worldwide. New ways to contribute to socio-economic growth and at the same time lower our emissions of greenhouse gases should be found.
The major changes of our energy systems are required for many reasons. We don’t only need to reduce the harmful effects, but also to address the oil shortage, the security of our energy supply, and even peace in the whole world.
