2 Read the text and fill in the gaps with parts of the sentences. There is one extra part.
Irish Travellers is a small ethnic group with its own traditions which they try to keep. Most of them live in Ireland and Northern Ireland (1) but there are large groups of Irish Travellers in the United Kingdom and the USA. In Ireland Irish Travellers is a small community who has a lot of problems in its attempt to survive as a culture and become part of Irish society. Among the challenges facing them are poverty and racism.
This ethnic group has a long history. According to some historians, the first references to this group date back to the 13th century but it is difficult to find exact dates as Irish Travellers left no written records of their own.
Often they are mistakenly considered part of the nomadic Romani, (2) an ethnic group which originated in the region of India and is now widespread throughout Europe. On the contrary, Irish Travellers come from Ireland, so the two cultures are not related. Both groups can be referred to so-called “walking people” (3) but the Irish Travellers are Roman Catholic and speak a language that is theirs alone. Their language, Shelta, is an old language, which has evolved with time and circumstances. In the past it was influenced by Irish Gaelic and now is infused with English.
Irish Travellers have original customs, traditions and language. They are famous for their musical and storytelling abilities.
In the past they often travelled in horse-drawn wagons in caravans (4) camping in different places on their way. Irish Travellers made a living by tinsmithing, horse trading and peddling. There were so many tinsmiths among them that the terms “Tinker” and “Irish Traveller” were used interchangeably.
Nowadays horses and wagons gave way to mobile homes driven by cars. The Irish Travellers are still “walking people” but there are fewer places to stop and fewer places where they are welcome.
Modern society has brought one more problem for Irish Travellers. There are not enough jobs (5) that could support a culture on wheels and today Irish Travellers mainly work in recycling.
Many people believe that Irish Travellers are a group of immoral and ignorant criminals (6) who have their secret language to trick innocent people. This is a prejudice. Most of the Irish Travellers are poor and uneducated people who form a unique community with its culture, language and problems.
