4 Read the text and choose the best options to fill in the gaps. Human Rights Day
The Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948. It has become a (1) universal standard for defending and promoting human rights which states that “Human beings are born with (2) equal rights and fundamental freedoms”. Since then the 10th of December has been marked as Human Rights Day.
Every year Human Rights Day has a special focus. In 2006 it focused on (3) fighting poverty as a matter of obligation, not of charity.
Poverty is (4) caused by human rights violations. In fact, human rights are closely connected with poverty. People more often become poor if their rights are (5) neglected. In this case they find it harder or impossible to participate in the labour market and have little or no access to (6) basic services and resources. Moreover, a lot of poor people in many countries do not have real rights to education, health or housing just (7) because they cannot afford them. Besides that poverty affects other human rights. For example, people with low income can’t get education, as a result they usually don’t take part in public life and can’t influence the policies affecting them.
Authorities must (8) take responsibility for dealing (9) with poverty. It is a duty of governments in all countries.
