2 a) Read the texts and match them with the headings. There is one extra heading.
1 d) Time or Money?
The major downside to staying at home was the financial matter. I couldn’t afford new clothes or having my nails done. Going out was limited to going for a walk in the park or having a picnic in the countryside. Eating out was beyond our means and out of the question. When my second child was born, my employer asked if I would consider returning to work. The money would have been very welcome but there was no one to look after my children until they were old enough to go to school. I decided that money was not as important to me as the time spent with my family. And I would still have to pay someone to look after my kids.
2 b) Clever Management
My friends used to tell me: “I don’t know how you stay at home all day. If I were you, I’d be bored out of my mind!” But I never was. I organised the housework so as not to be a slave to it. Of course, there was plenty to be done around the house but it was the sharing of the chores that made the difference. Everyone in my family learned how to tidy up after themselves and the thorough cleaning would wait until the end of the week. I decided on the necessary things that had to be done daily but if they weren’t completed by midday, they were left until the next day. That gave me time for my children and my own interests as well.
3 e) A Role Reversal
Every family is in need of a homemaker. It could be mum or dad or part-time both. It doesn’t matter. In my family we chose the traditional way — I stay at home, but some families choose the other way round, especially if the woman has a better-paid job. We have actually experienced both ways. When my husband was made redundant several years ago, I had to work full-time. He stayed at home and looked after the children. The days when people looked down on housewives have long gone. Nowadays people are proud of being a “homemaker”. It’s one of the most worthwhile occupations, which brings terrific rewards, though not financial.
4 c) Exhausting for All
When my youngest child started school, I went back to work part-time. We really needed extra money but I found it very tiring to cope with the house and my job. I can’t understand how people manage to work full-time, do housework and bring up children. They have big houses, expensive cars, fancy clothes, but do they really have time to enjoy all these? They start their day as early as 6.30, their kids are driven through heavy traffic to be dropped at the child minder. The parent has to commute to work after that. Then in the evening the process starts again in reverse. The kids are picked up from school clubs late and put to bed as soon as they get home. Everyone is worn out. What’s the point in living like that?
5 f) The Perfect Job
So, after my first baby arrived, I felt for years that I had the best job ever. I was my own boss. I could work when I wanted and have a rest when I wanted. If I didn’t feel like cleaning or doing the shopping and wanted to have a day off, that was fine. Nobody else would have to be asked to cover for me, my work could wait until I was ready to do it. Oh yes, it was hard work taking care of our home and our children and the hours were long, but the work was varied and very rewarding. In fact, being a homemaker was the ideal job for me. I was absolutely happy being a housewife and mum. Watching my children grow, witnessing their first steps, hearing their first words and all the other milestones were worth more than any amount of money.
