Speaker 1
Can computer technology and the internet alienate us from our friends? Absolutely not! I currently have more contact with most of my friends through the internet than ever before. What seemed to be so many kilometres apart in the past now seems accessible at the blink of an eye. And the ability to chat immediately with my friends still amazes me each day, especially when they are in another country or out of reach, that is, until I sit in front of my computer screen. Now, is that magic, or what?
Speaker 2
The internet is still new and chaotic, but it has the potential to carry one persontasks views, words, and beliefs all over the world. This could very well be the medium through which revolutionary changes are made for our society on a scale that has never been achieved before.
Speaker 3
I understand that the internet can mean that some people become more and more cut off from everyday life. Instead of walking or driving to the supermarket, they go online, order their food, have it delivered, all without having had to leave the house or speak to a person face to face. Some people can take using the "net" to an extreme when it actually starts taking over their whole lives. The same goes for people who watch too many hours of TV and end up planning their day around the TV schedule. There will always be some people who will, of course, lake the internet to an extreme allowing it to cut them off from the outside world. But for the most part, I believe the internet to be a positive tool for everyday use in the home.
Speaker 4
Whatever happened to the friendly world I used to know a few years back that didntaskt depend on the internet for absolutely everything? Sure, there are the few people who use it simply to make new friends and have a good time. But more often than not, there are the people who use it because they are going through troubled times at home. They may be having marital problems or feel lonely and unloved. Or they are simply people that in real life nobody likes and the internet is the only place that makes them feel socially accepted. People spend way too much time sitting in front of their computers when they could be making efforts to improve their own lives.
Speaker 5
The internet is as much a part of my daily life as getting up in the morning and having a cup of coffee. If I want to know what the weather is doing that day, I go and check it out online. If I want to buy a gift for my husband, I search the internet for the best recommendations and prices before going to the shops to buy it. If I want to surprise a friend and remind them that I am thinking of them. I go online and send an e-card. If I want to talk to my family who are miles apart, I can use my instant chat messenger.
