86 Read the statements 1—10 and the texts A—H. Match the statements with the texts, several statements could go with one text.
1 Producing GM food could be more important than environmental issues.
2 Genetic engineering in some areas presents a certain threat to organic food production.
3 Genetic engineering is beneficial for evolution.
4 It is necessary to do long and serious research in the field of genetic engineering.
5 Modern methods of food production are insufficient for current demand of food.
6 Even small amount of GM crops can put an end to organic food production.
7 Genetic engineering started in ancient times.
8 Genetic engineering of some species is more important for some areas.
9 Organic farming may become uneconomical due to GM food introduction.
10 GM food production can lead to saving people’s lives in some countries.
A What GM crops need are large scale field tests to identify the effects they have. It is necessary to know that this technology is safe for people’s health. Rushing forward with this new technology is not wise at all, we should be able to observe what impact these crops will have on the environment on a large scale and over some years.
B Genetic engineering of ‘golden’ rice is a good example of beneficial GM crop introduction. Ordinary rice lacks many essential vitamins and minerals, whereas the ‘golden’ rice is high in vitamin A. This is especially significant in third world areas such as India where rice is the main food source and the people are malnourished.
C One of the biggest challenges people face now is food security. We must find ways to produce healthier food as the current methods of production will not be sufficient to meet the increasing demand. At the same time it is important to continue to reduce the impact our agricultural activities have on the environment.
D If genetic engineering advances as fast as before, organic farms will soon become so contaminated by genes from the new crops that they can no longer exist, or will have to spend so much trying to protect themselves that they will become economically inefficient.
E The genes from GM crops can travel long distances and create superseeds. It was found out that even if only a tenth of a region’s territory is planted with them, organic farming would be very difficult or impossible to continue.
F Around the world in many poor countries, people are starving. It has been argued that GM foods would save lives, and that for such poor countries, this is far more important than any green notions the developed countries might be considering. This is certainly a strong argument for many people around the world, this could make the difference between life and death.
G Biotechnology has existed since ancient times. Plants and animals were being altered and selectively bred for better characteristics as early as 5000BC but its most dramatic advances have come in recent years.
H GM can be seen as a tool to make evolution happen faster, to make a new species acquire beneficial characteristics. GM may also become useful in healthcare in the future.
