I was always the fun kid to be around. I was nice to everyone and accepted people for who they were. I just basically liked everyone and they in turn liked me. I was very shy, though, and in the beginning, a lot of my classmates thought I was just stuck up. But I eventually came out of my shyness and my friends got to know the real me. I was one of those students who was a little of everything, so I did not stand out. To me, a friend in a crowd was whoever I happened to be spending my time with and I never limited myself to just one group. In fact, I was a "group hoppertask.taskI liked too many of my classmates to be considered a part of any one group. So I found myself in a lot of trouble because I was always running down the hallway as fast as I could to make it to my next class after stopping to talk to everyone. Even today I couldntaskt walk through town without stopping to talk to almost everyone. Because of this, my friends and family hate to go into town with me since I constantly keep them waiting. I was not the most successful student or the smartest or the best dressed, but I was the one everyone knew would be there if they needed a friend, or just someone to talk to.

Itaskve always been a loner — possibly even a hermit... I was never into fashion, or anything the other kids my age were into. I guess I was a misfit in school! I hated playing sports and still do. I was short and scrawny, and I always preferred being in the woods or with my pets to being around people. I never went to any of the dances, for all the obvious reasons. Some of the teasing and insults hurt me at the time, but even back then, I knew that looks and popularity didntaskt mean very much if you had nothing else going for you. Itaskve always tried to hang around people who are smarter than me and learn, learn. learn. Lucky for me. theytaskre not so hard to find. I think thattasks why I like who I am now so much... I finally fit in somewhere!!!
Speaker 3
Yeah, in school I was popular. Basketball player, quarterback on the football team one season, student council... blah, blah, blah. But, I never, ever applied myself to my classes. I just got by until I could get on with real life. I mostly got along well with all the groups at school. I didntaskt do all the things they did, but I could always find something to laugh about with someone or pick an area of interest that would somehow connect us.
I will say that, even back in grade school, the one thing I could not tolerate was anyone teasing or bullying anyone else, especially those who were weaker, awkward, shy. I didntaskt worry about those who were tough or just capable of taking care of themselves. But if someone tended to be vulnerable, I would defend them to the end and even got to the point of taking on a couple of huge bullies! Those who didntaskt know me sometimes tried to make fun of me... but never the shy kid who walked through the halls alone. I protected that kid and many others, and even to this day, I would still defend them and anyone else who needed help.

Oh, the memories... I really enjoyed high school. I actually learned a lot and had a great time. Itaskve always had a thing for school. Where I grew up, all of my neighborhood buddies were my school buddies. Theretasks still a gang of us that are friends to this day. I wasntaskt a cheerleader or anything like that, but I felt popular in my group. Our high school was right on the coast so there were classes like oceanography, marine wildlife and even scuba-diving! These, of course, were usually in addition to our normally required stuff. But, as you can see, there were plenty of options to keep us all interested... and I made good grades. In my senior year, I had enough credits to go just half a day the first semester and then graduated at Christmas. I look back on the whole experience with very fond memories.
Speaker 5
I was with the same group of friends all throughout high school. We all got really good grades but we still had fun. We were different because we didntaskt really fit into any one group. We were fun-loving, always cracking ourselves up, and not caring about what we wore. We all loved the outdoors and went camping almost every weekend together. There were about ten of us. boys and girls. We would take off on a Friday and come back Sunday, having gone to the mountains, or the beach, the desert — anywhere. It drove my mother crazy... We were the best in all the science clubs, and got straight As, which made the nerds mad because we werentaskt serious all the time. We were friends with the science teachers, so got to go as assistants on all the science trips. Those teachers loved us. and we still e-mail back and forth, even now.
