74 Read the short texts and decide whether your guesses about the countries were true.
A France
Who are the French? What are they like? It is widely believed that a typical French person is romantic, civilised and sophisticated. But as everywhere in the world, life in France contains many contradictions and is much more complex than it might seem. The French language has a divine status in France and is considered to be the language of love, food and the Gods. The French love their language so much that sometimes use it as a tool to embarrass uneducated foreigners. The French managed to preserve their spectacular countryside and the charm of their villages, towns and cities. They enjoy the best cuisine in the world and are renowned for their appetite for gastronomy, art, literature and music.
B Japan
Japanese lifestyle in the 21st century is characterised mainly by changing trends in urban living because the majority of the country’s population have moved to cities. Japan is one of the fastest developing nations in the world. Japan today has created its own idea of fashion, lifestyle and everyday living. Lifestyle trends in Tokyo undergo rapid changes that are faster than in other capitals of the world. However, to maintain a balance the unique customs by which we immediately identify Japan are carefully preserved and still exist today.
C India
India is a very culturally diverse country. People speak more than 18 different languages but in spite of so many differences people live together in unity and full harmony. It becomes especially obvious in male and female dressing styles. Indian dressing to a great extent is influenced by the people’s background and the country’s past. The female traditional Indian dress is sari which is worn in many ways. Although people tend to wear traditional outfit, the dressing style of the Indians has lately been influenced by the western style. People might look very modern but they remain purely Indian from inside. They share traditional community values that cannot be surpassed by anyone or anything. For example, parents in Indian families are always looked upon with deep love and respect.
D Italy
Compared to other European countries the Italian lifestyle is slow, relaxed and unique in its own way. You might notice a faster pace of life in Milano, Torino and Treviso, Italian industrial cities, but overall, it’s laid back.
Italians love to chat over coffee, go out for a stroll in the middle of the day and enjoy long lunches and dinners. Family and friends are top priority of life to any Italian. They never spend a day without enquiring about their parents and children. This can explain the fact that Italians who live outside their country miss their families a lot. These days the population of Italy is aging and a major part of the Italian population is over sixty. This adds to the slowness of life, and perhaps enforces the strong family bonding and mutual respect between generations Italians are so proud of.
E ChinaChina is the third largest country in the world which covers a vast territory. It is important to remember that the Chinese represent a very diverse group with different cultural traditions and dialects. It is customary for the Chinese to emphasise family values and maintain close family links. People in China like both outdoor and indoor activities. Outdoor activities include walking, easy physical exercise, Tai-Chi and gardening, while indoor activities could include listening to famous Cantonese Opera music, going to the cinema or playing chess or Mahjong. The Chinese like a routine and generally prefer a structured pattern of the day.
F Sweden
Do you think that all Swedes are tall, blond and have blue eyes? This is absolutely not the case. People in Sweden are very nice and helpful but probably sometimes can look shy and reserved. Swedes are very punctual, so it is better to arrive to a meeting five minutes earlier, than five minutes later. The winters are dark and cold, especially in the northern parts of the country, and you might think that Swedes are not eager to stop and talk in the street but they really do like to socialise, only indoors. The Swedes are known to be keen on queueing. If you push your way through the queue, no excuse will be good enough! People are very direct and open to the world, which probably explains the fact that they normally don’t have curtains on their windows.
